Use に for a person's location and います for their presence.

Use います to say someone has children because children are people.

Learning point

林檎 is りんご and is also commonly written リンゴ or りんご.

how many

りんごはいくつありますか。

How many apples are there?

Learning point

いくつ corresponds to general counts such as 一つ and 二つ; it can also ask age in context.

四つよっつ

four (things)

パンを四つよっつ買いかいます。

I'll buy four pieces of bread.

Learning point

四つ is よっつ; keep the small っ.

切手きって

stamp

切手きってを五ご枚まいください。

Please give me five stamps.

Learning point

Stamps are flat items and are counted with 枚.

It's one thousand yen in total.

全部で totals a quantity or price; it does not necessarily mean buying every product.

外国がいこく

外国がいこくへ旅行りょこうしたいです。

I want to travel abroad.

Learning point

外国 refers to another country; 外国語 means a foreign language.

There are five students.

Learning point

人 counts people; 一人 and 二人 have the special readings ひとり and ふたり.

How many people are in your family?

Learning point

For a count, 何人 is なんにん; asking nationality can use なにじん instead.

みんなで写真しゃしんを撮りとりましょう。

みんなで means everyone acting together; みなさん politely addresses a group.

兄弟きょうだい

siblings

兄弟きょうだいは三さん人にんです。

There are three of us siblings.

兄弟 can include sisters and need not mean only brothers.

四人よにん

家族かぞくは四よん人にんです。

There are four people in my family.

四人 is よにん, not よんにん.

姉あね

姉あねは東京とうきょうにいます。

Use 姉 for your own older sister to outsiders; お姉さん addresses her or refers to someone else's.

二人ふたり

どのくらい can ask duration, distance, or degree; context determines the answer.

A noun plus をお願いします politely orders or requests something.

This is a common conversational greeting; ね invites agreement with the observation.

This can be a neighborly greeting, not necessarily a request for a detailed itinerary.

The rest of the sentence, such as 行きます, is omitted in this casual explanation of where you are going.

Say this to someone leaving who is expected to return; it often replies to 行ってきます.

I'm off; I'll be back

行っいってきます。六ろく時じに帰りかえります。

I'm off. I'll be back at six.

The departing person says this with the expectation of returning, not as a permanent farewell.

Keep this distinct from オーストリア, Austria; their spellings are similar.

船便ふなびん

surface mail; sea freight

荷物にもつを船便ふなびんで送りおくりました。

I sent the package by surface mail.

Learning point

船便 means surface or sea mail; it is generally slower than air mail, with timing dependent on the service.

航空便こうくうびん

air mail; air freight

航空こうくう便びんで手紙てがみを送りおくります。

I'll send the letter by air mail.

Learning point

航空便で marks the shipping method; here it does not name a passenger flight itself.

みかん

I ate two mandarins.

みかん normally means a mandarin-type citrus, distinct from an オレンジ.

五つ is いつつ, distinct from 五日, いつか.

八つやっつ

りんごが八つやっつあります。

There are eight apples.

八つ is やっつ, with a small っ.

十とお

ten (things)

卵たまごを十じゅう買いかいました。

I bought ten eggs.

The general object count 十 is とお, without つ.

クラス

class

クラスに留学生りゅうがくせいがいます。

There are international students in the class.

Learning point

クラス can mean a class group; 教室 usually refers to the classroom.

There are five international students.

留学 means studying abroad; 留学生 is the person doing it.

There are two cars.

台 counts vehicles and machines such as cars or computers, not people.

封筒ふうとう

envelope

封筒ふうとうに手紙てがみを入れいれます。

I put the letter in an envelope.

Learning point

An envelope is thin and can be counted with 枚; use に for where the letter is inserted.

九つここのつ

nine (things)

箱はこにりんごが九つここのつあります。

There are nine apples in the box.

九つ is ここのつ; its ending differs from 九日, ここのか.

休みますやすみます

take time off

明日あした、学校がっこうを休みやすみます。

I'll take tomorrow off from school.

Learning point

学校 or 会社 plus を休む means be absent from it, not the place where you rest.

会社を休みます。かいしゃをやすみます。

take a day off work

風邪かぜですから、会社かいしゃを休みやすみます。

I have a cold, so I'll take the day off work.

会社を休む is absence from work; 休憩する is a short break during work.

サンドイッチ
