Reading with less dependence on furigana

Remove cues on learned words, then check recognition in a new sentence.

Separate a reading cue from word recognition

Furigana supplies a reading but does not prove recognition of the word underneath. Test a few recurring learned words with the cue covered. Keep support for genuinely new words. When a new book has fewer cues, identify whether known-word shapes or readings are missing before reviewing.

Fade support word by word

Use paper to cover selected cues, or copy chosen words into a note without readings. The reader cannot automatically remove every furigana annotation embedded in a source PDF. Expand only a checkable set instead of making the entire page inaccessible.

Check a new sentence

A memorised line may conceal dependence on position. Put the learned word in a short new sentence and check reading and meaning. Record shape, reading and comprehension errors separately; keep new grammar limited so the result remains interpretable.

Example

Original change: 「学校へ行きます。」to 「学校で日本語を勉強します。」Check recognition of 学校 rather than its memorised page position.

Check your understanding

Hide readings for three learned words and read one of them in a new short sentence.

Explanation

Keep support for an unsuccessful word and practise it further. Independent recognition matters more than eliminating every cue.
