Japanese readings when you already recognise Chinese characters
Use character recognition while checking the Japanese reading and sense of each word.
A familiar shape is not a known Japanese word
A Chinese-background learner may recognise a shape and infer a meaning, but Japanese readings and use still need checking. Separate approximate visual understanding from reading aloud and understanding audio. Record the whole word with kana rather than one isolated character reading.
Add readings through actual words
For example, 「学生(がくせい)」and 「生きる(いきる)」contain 生 but do not share one replaceable reading. Learn the current word and add another when encountered. If reading lists do not transfer, return to short lesson sentences containing actual words.
Remove cues selectively
Cover furigana on learned words while keeping support for new ones. Produce the reading, compare word audio, and test it in a different short sentence. A speed drop may reflect slow retrieval; repair particular words rather than restore translations or romaji everywhere.
Example
Separate columns: 「学生」 | がくせい | student in this sentence | visually readable, not yet recognised in audio. Next time, use audio before showing the characters.
Check your understanding
Read two familiar-character lesson words without cues and recheck in another sentence.
Explanation
Practise word readings for reading errors and audio prompts for listening gaps; Chinese recognition does not replace either check.
Find your question
- I recognise Chinese characters but misread Japanese words in Standard Japanese. Should I learn characters or whole words?
- Removing reading cues slows me down sharply. How can I gradually reduce furigana dependence?
- 生 has different readings in different words. Must a beginner memorise every reading at once?
- I memorised onyomi and kunyomi lists but cannot recognise words in passages. How can I return to lesson vocabulary?
