Moving from textbooks to manageable reading
Try a short passage and see how much help you need before choosing reading material. You do not need to look up every word or turn it into a card.
Try a manageable text first
Halfway through Elementary I, try short controlled reading rather than assume news suits you. After beginner work, manga may introduce ellipsis and relationship-dependent speech. Test whether you can explain one event from the text, not only infer the scene from pictures.
Separate text difficulty from method
Read a small segment and keep the first interpretation. Look up blockers to actor, action or conclusion, then retry. If several forms per sentence remain unknown and the task still fails, difficulty may be too high. If lookup expands only to collect every sense, narrow the task instead.
Bring back selected words
Keep recurring, task-critical or personally needed words with their source sentence and reading. Pause new intake when the list keeps expanding and check old recall. Repair one basic connection in the textbook if needed, without starting another complete grammar course.
Example
Original task: read an appointment note for time, place and whether it changed. A word that does not block these facts may not need immediate collection.
Check your understanding
Keep a first interpretation, a post-lookup answer and the amount of support needed.
Explanation
Explain how the conclusion was recovered; shorten or simplify when the task remains copying a translation.
