Hearing words you already know
Check whether you hear the sounds, separate the words and recall their meanings before deciding what to practise.
Locate sound versus meaning
Hear one short sentence without text and note the kana or words, then compare the transcript. Misheard sounds need sound work; repeatable sounds with slow meaning need retrieval work. Replace continuous translation into Chinese or English with one factual question after a short meaning unit.
Practise timing contrasts separately
Use familiar recorded words to compare vowel duration, doubled-consonant timing and moraic n separately. Compare 「きて」and 「きって」with text, then without it. Do not guess from romaji. Particles may lack the emphasis you expect from English key words; assign attention to particles and endings too.
Return to connected speech
Once isolated words are recognisable, hear a short sentence containing them. Mark predicates, particles and meaning units without expecting pauses between every word. After segmented practice, listen continuously and check negatives, time and people. Log sound errors separately from meaning errors and test another short sentence.
Example
Original contrast: 「来てください。」and 「切手をください。」Notice the timing of きて/きって and identify what each request asks for.
Check your understanding
Select one misheard word, distinguish its sound, then recognise it in a new short sentence.
Explanation
Record a sound error or a retrieval gap. Shorten a new sample when needed and continue the same targeted repair.
Find your question
- I hear long and short vowels as the same word. How can I practise small sound contrasts?
- I miss doubled consonants and moraic n. I can read along but cannot hear the difference without text. What should I do?
- I know each word separately but cannot find its boundaries in a sentence. How should I practise?
- I translate each heard word into Chinese and miss the rest of the sentence. How should I change the task?
- I miss particles because I only listen for stressed English-style words. What should I check in a short sentence?
