Starting shadowing when you cannot keep up
Understand a manageable segment, control its length and check your recording.
Start with comprehensible repetition
If one sentence is too much, check meaning and readings, listen to a short segment, pause and repeat. Choose understandable audio with matching text and pause manually by meaning unit. Track replay is not automatic sentence segmentation; record on an external device or app.
Change length or speed one at a time
Slow playback can reveal omissions, but return toward the original speed. Shorten the segment while retaining whole words, then lengthen after content is stable. In a shared room, prepare readings and boundaries silently; preparation does not replace the later aloud task.
Check content and timing before fine detail
Check wrong or missing words first, then pauses and rhythm. Seek informed feedback on pitch or fine pronunciation you cannot assess reliably instead of award a vague similarity score. Repair one point and try a comparable new sentence.
Example
Practice ladder: hear 「午後三時に会いましょう。」, pause and repeat, overlap a manageable segment, then attempt the full line at original speed. Check words, timing and pauses.
Check your understanding
Record a short sentence and choose one omission or pause for the next attempt.
Explanation
Lengthen after content holds. A recording reveals questions; it is not automatic pronunciation assessment.
Find your question
- I cannot keep up with a beginner dialogue. Should I pause and repeat or immediately shadow slowed audio?
- I can follow slowed audio but lose the line at normal speed. What should I practise next?
- My recording sounds unlike the original. Should I first check wrong words, timing, or pitch?
- I cannot speak aloud in my dorm room. What preparation is useful, and when must I actually speak?
