Looking up textbook words with an English dictionary

Find the dictionary form, choose the meaning that fits the sentence, then return to your reading.

Find the entry rather than its inflection

For 「読みました」, use the learned inflection to recover 「読む」. Locate predicate and particle boundaries rather than search a whole string as one word. When PDF text cannot be copied, enter known kana or use an external dictionary’s radical or handwriting lookup, then compare the returned shape with the source.

Choose the sense in the current sentence

Several English glosses are not a demand to memorise every sense at once. Use word class, object, particle and situation to select the current sense. If dictionary examples are too advanced, return to a learned short structure and seek feedback on an uncertain combination rather than copying a sentence you do not understand.

Record why the result fits

Keep words that block this task or are useful again: source position, dictionary form, current sense and unresolved detail. Reread the sentence and answer the task after lookup instead of spending an hour copying entries. This is an external dictionary workflow; the site’s Chinese meanings do not become English when you change the interface language.

Example

Lookup record: 「図書館で本を借りました。」→ 借りる → borrow here → object 本; return to identifying what was borrowed and where.

Check your understanding

Find an inflected lesson verb and record its entry form, current sense and reason.

Explanation

The reason should follow the sentence’s combination or situation. Record uncertainty when the entry form or sense is not established.
