Diagnosing an intermediate plateau
Use one short passage to check reading, listening and retelling, then decide what to practise next.
Test four abilities separately
Read a short passage without looking up words and note what you do not understand. After checking the words, explain how the clauses relate and what the passage says. Listen to the same passage for one fact, then retell it briefly. If the words are clear but the relationships are not, practise sentence or paragraph structure. Record reading and listening difficulties separately.
Practise one difficult point before switching books
When several lessons stall, choose one recurring error and work on manageable segments for a week. If intermediate Lesson 1 remains blocked despite familiar beginner work, begin with the first identified failed task rather than an endless instruction to review basics.
Choose an observable next task
Name the material and what you will check: find the main clause in a sentence with a modifier, or listen to two sentences for the time. If vocabulary, structure, remembering information and expression are all difficult, choose easier material and one task first. Keep practising what already works; you do not need to restart the whole course.
Example
Diagnostic log: words known, contrast relation missed; people heard, condition forgotten. Mark contrast and conclusion now, then check condition listening separately.
Check your understanding
Write one specific error and one short task for the next session.
Explanation
The next task should leave an answer or annotation; broad instructions to listen more do not test the cause.
