Reader workflow: comparison, mobile panels, and error notes
Choose tools for one study task, locate text and answers independently, and understand mobile controls, local notes, and keyboard focus.
Open a tool only for the current task
Start with an outcome: understand a short dialogue, check two answers, and record one error. Read the main text first; select answers when checking and audio when practising sound. Treating every document, vocabulary list, note panel, and outside app as a simultaneous checklist creates more switching. Materials are grouped by lesson, but you still need to decide the next action.
A volume cover on the bookshelf opens that volume’s first lesson directly. To find another lesson, use Lessons in the reader. Alternatively, inspect the textbook introduction and volume page before choosing a lesson. Confirm the book and lesson at the top before selecting available material. Changing the interface language does not replace the textbook with a translated edition.
Single page, facing pages, and Compare serve different tasks
Single and facing-page layouts arrange one document: one page at a time or two adjacent pages. Compare opens two independent reading panes, for example text and answers, each located separately. It does not automatically locate matching answers. Use one page for focused reading, facing pages for content spanning a spread, and Compare after attempting the questions.
The facing-page option is available in a reading pane that is neither narrow nor in Compare mode. Comparison depends on the actual reading-area width, even on a computer or tablet. Close Lessons and Tools for more space, or return to one pane if side-by-side text is too small. Phones and narrow windows prioritize one pane and one page; the device name alone does not establish the available layout.
Locate text and answers independently
With sufficient width, select Compare, choose the main text on the left and available answers on the right. Use the left pane’s previous and next buttons to locate a question, then use the right pane’s buttons to locate its answer by question number. Turning a page on the left does not turn the right. Compare cannot create answers missing from a lesson.
Pane page numbers locate pages within the current lesson’s current document. They may differ from printed book numbers, and matching text and answers need not share a number. Adjust each reading position as needed after zooming. Re-entering starts with the fitted initial zoom, rather than guaranteeing restoration of a manual zoom percentage or exact scrolling position.
Example
Example: keep an attempted question in the text pane and locate the same question number in answers. Text page 3 and answer page 1 are not contradictory: match question content, not page numbers.
Check your understanding
Note both pane positions, move only the main text forward one page, and check that answers remain in place. Return to the question and check one of your answers.
Explanation
Use the text pane’s button to change only that pane. If arrow keys seek audio or change a material tab, playback and focus have changed their function. Visible pane buttons give a clear check. Include an explanation for an answer as the learning result, rather than only checking the layout.
On phones, switch materials and close panels to resume reading
A narrow screen shows one material at a time. Use Lessons at the top to change lessons, then Back to reading to leave the lesson panel. Open Tools, choose audio, notes, or vocabulary practice, and use Close to dismiss the tool panel. Return to the text after selecting or writing instead of leaving a panel over the reading area.
When comparison is unavailable, attempt a question in the text, retain its number, switch to answers, and switch back as needed. Landscape orientation may increase usable space, but comparison remains width-dependent; rotating can also close panels. For obscured controls or blank pages, report device, browser, orientation, book, and lesson through Contact. Different phones are not assumed to behave identically.
Record one error instead of copying a page
Notes are stored by book and lesson in the current browser. Wait for Saved in this browser after typing. If saving fails, copy the text to your own document. The panel provides input and clearing, without an export button or account cloud sync. A different device or browser, or cleared site data, will not automatically bring the notes back. Copy important notes separately.
Use four fields: original error, corrected sentence, situation and reason, and next check. Verify the correction against the lesson or a reliable source; mark uncertain free writing as awaiting confirmation. Local records can support resuming the recent lesson, selected materials, and pages when still present, but audio does not autoplay or restore its track or timestamp.
Example
Original note: error—図書館に本を読みます。Correction—図書館で本を読みます。Condition—で marks where the reading action happens, not where a book exists. Next check—say you watch a film at home and choose the particle yourself.
Check your understanding
Reduce this example to four lines and create the same record for one genuine lesson error. Close Notes and return to the text for a new sentence.
Explanation
The next sentence could be 家で映画を見ます。Retain the action-location condition rather than an incorrect “all locations use で” rule. Do not record an unverified guess as a confirmed correction. Copy important content before clearing site data.
Check playback and focus before using keys
While textbook audio plays, Right or Up skips forward five seconds and Left or Down skips back five seconds, including inside the textbook PDF. Use the target pane’s page buttons to turn pages during playback. With audio paused, click into a PDF pane before using Left and Right to turn its pages. On material or tool tabs, the same keys change tabs.
Arrow keys retain text-editing behavior in notes and ordinary fields instead of seeking audio. There is no global Space playback shortcut. Tab to the play/pause button, then use Space or Enter to activate it; Space elsewhere may scroll. Use visible buttons if focus is uncertain instead of repeatedly guessing with keys. Finish by checking the study outcome you selected at the beginning.
