From beginner to intermediate Japanese: a readiness check

After Minna Lesson 50 or Standard Japanese beginner study, check comprehension and retelling, then repair specific gaps while starting intermediate tasks.

Intermediate study connects information: check active beginner skills

Moving beyond Minna Lesson 50 requires more than looking up every new word. Chukyu I bridges beginner and intermediate study through longer listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks. Our Intermediate 1 lists lessons 1–12: numbering restarts, rather than continuing with Beginner Lesson 51. Do not assume every lesson has equally complete resources.

Check noun modification with plain forms, event order, reasons, and conditions, and explain a choice in two or three sentences. Imperfect fluency in beginner grammar need not prevent a start. Ask whether basic structures repeatedly block understanding. If you can identify the main clause and need only limited vocabulary help, start and repair gaps alongside it. If every sentence depends on a translation, schedule focused beginner review first.

After Lesson 50, try four recall tasks

Choose a previously studied beginner passage that you have not seen for a week. Without translation, identify who does what, locate a noun modifier, explain event order and reasons, and listen to its matching audio before recounting it in two or three sentences. Reformulate rather than recite. This is a study check, not a JLPT score chart or admissions test.

Record the exact sentence, obstructing structure, and review topic rather than “my basics are bad.” Missing words need local vocabulary work; unclear plain forms or modifiers need focused review; understood rules with weak production need short substitutions and retelling. If three attempts still fail to establish the main information, shorten the passage instead of forcing an entire lesson.

Example

Original passage: 「昨日、友達に借りた本を読みました。おもしろかったので、夜遅くまで読んでしまいました。」 Yesterday I read a book borrowed from a friend. It was interesting, so I ended up reading late into the night.

「本を読みました」 is the main clause, 「友達に借りた」 modifies the book, and 「ので」 gives the reason. 「読んでしまいました」 can convey the unplanned late reading. One reformulation is 「友達の本がおもしろくて、昨日は寝るのが遅くなりました。」

You can move from Standard Japanese by checking skills

Changing courses does not automatically require restarting all fifty Minna beginner lessons. Use your Standard Japanese materials to review learned plain forms, te-forms, noun modifiers, giving/receiving, and passive or causative forms, then sample a short section of Minna Intermediate 1. The courses have different sequences: Standard Lesson 48 is not a guarantee of item-by-item equivalence to Minna Lesson 50. Check your contents and actual use.

For an unfamiliar prerequisite, consult the corresponding topic in Minna’s beginner contents or your own Standard explanations, one gap at a time. A terminology difference may need only a note connecting name, example, and meaning. If many basic structures are missing, spend one or two weeks on focused review and try again; a completed cover-to-cover course alone cannot determine readiness.

Split the first lesson into three visits

First read the heading and opening, pose two questions, and analyze a short section for the main clause, key words, and paragraph relationship. On the second visit, listen to that section for its topic and compare missed details with the text. Do not begin by shadowing a long unfamiliar passage. On the third visit, attempt exercises, retell in three sentences, and add one personal view. Expand the passage after understanding it.

A thirty-minute example is ten minutes repairing a beginner gap, fifteen reading/listening to a short intermediate section, and five retelling without the text. This is a schedule suggestion, not a one-lesson-per-week guarantee. Check editions when audio differs; choose a few keywords manually if no word list is available. Nihongo Desk does not score speech: arrange separate partner or teacher feedback, and use an external recorder if needed.

Use an original exercise to choose the next repair

The passage below tests movement from individual sentences to connected information. Attempt it before opening the explanation. The target is not speed on every character: identify the borrowed item and why the reader finished the difficult book, and whether you can describe the relationship in your own sentences.

If reading succeeds but listening fails, work on that short segment’s sounds and pauses. If comprehension succeeds but retelling fails, use keywords and gradually remove them. If modification is unclear, return to noun-modifier practice. Readiness grows through independent task completion; textbook completion does not itself guarantee a JLPT level.

Check your understanding

In 「先週、図書館で借りた本は少し難しかったです。でも、毎日少しずつ読んだので、日曜日に読み終わりました。」 identify the modifier of 「本」.

Why did the reader finish the difficult book? State the reason and completion time in Japanese.

Write two or three sentences about your own experience, preserving a difficulty, repeated action, and result.

Explanation

「先週、図書館で借りた」 modifies 「本」. Borrowing happened last week; finishing happened on Sunday. They are separate events.

For example: 「毎日少しずつ読んだので、日曜日に読み終わりました。」 Daily small amounts of reading explain completion despite the difficulty.

One model is 「漢字を覚えるのは難しかったです。でも、毎日五つずつ練習したので、前より読めるようになりました。」 Clear relationships matter more than copying this exact sentence.
